How can I practise good personal hygiene to keep myself and others safe on the Gautrain?
Here are some hygiene tips to follow when using the Gautrain system:
- Make use of the alcohol-based hand sanitisers provided at all stations, before and after your trip
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed or unsanitised hands
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a flexed elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the bin provided, and immediately wash or sanitise your hands
Will a face mask keep me safe from possible infection on public transport?
It is now compulsory to wear cloth or fabric face masks when using public transport, to curb the spread of Covid-19. South Africa's health department says that "wearing a mask when in public places, especially crowded places, can help slow the spread of Covid-19".
However, the department cautions that even when wearing a mask, hand-washing and social distancing remain the most important interventions to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
Avoid touching the mask or your face while you’re out and when you get back home, wash the mask with soap and hot water immediately and wash your hands again.
If you have flu-like symptoms, or are coughing or sneezing, stay home until you recover fully. Don’t forget, it’s important that you see a doctor as soon as possible.
